2008 Man of the Year Contest at AoM

by Cameron Schaefer on November 8, 2008

As many of you know I’ve been honored to have written several posts over at Art of Manliness. I love the blog and believe in it’s message.  With that said, I wanted to highlight an awesome contest they currently have going on where they have partnered with Old Spice to pick the 2008 Man of the Year.

Here’s a description of the contest from the blog:

The Art of Manliness, the premier independent men’s interest publication, has teamed up with Old Spice to find the 2008 Man of the Year. The goal of the contest is to honor men who represent what’s best in men. After accepting nominations, we will open voting up to the public to select the 2008 Art of Manliness Man of the Year. The winner will receive $2,000 in cash, plus products from Old Spice.

The Contest

The First Annual Art of Manliness Man of the Year Award sponsored by Old Spice seeks to find the man who represents what’s best in men; men who do the right thing, even when it’s not convenient; men who work hard and never complain; and men who are loyal to their friends and family. In today’s celebrity focused world, these type of men sadly go unrecognized. The Art of Manliness and Old Spice want to change that. We want to shine the spotlight on men who know what it means to be a man. With the help of Art of Manliness readers, we seek to honor the Man of the Year by giving him $2,000 in cash and a manly stash of Old Spice products.

Examples of Manliness

We’re looking for men who epitomize the manliness that used to exist before the arrival of metrosexual pretty boys. Examples of the type of manliness we’re talking about include men like Theodore Roosevelt and Winston Churchill. Men like your grandpa. These men knew what it meant to be a man. They understood things like hard work, responsibility, and looking out for others. They lived by a code of honor and respect for others. Sadly, many of today’s men lack these attributes. But we know there are men still out there like this. Our goal is to find them and honor them.

The Selection Process

From October 20, 2008 until November 9, 2008, The Art of Manliness will be accepting nominations for the 2008 Art of Manliness Man of the Year Award. Nominations are open to the public and can be done through this online form. This is a chance for sons to honor their fathers or grandfathers or wives to the let the world know about their amazing husbands. Perhaps you know a man in your community who epitomizes manliness. This is your opportunity to honor the great men in your life.

After we receive the nominees, an editorial board will whittle down the candidates to 10 finalists. We’ll select the finalists based on the essay about your candidate as well as the two references you provide. We’re looking for a man who represents the best in men, so please provide examples of your nominee displaying honorable manliness in your essay.

From November 24, 2008 to December 13, 2008 voting on the 10 finalists will be open to the public at The Art of Manliness website. The man with the most votes at the end of this period will be crowned the 2008 Art of Manliness Man of the Year. We’ll announce the winner on December 14, 2008.

If there is a man you would like to nominate please do so RIGHT NOW! The final day to submit your nomination is tomorrow. Here’s the link to the nomination form.
