Deadlifts

“The deadlift keeps company with standing, running, jumping, and throwing for functionality but imparts quick and prominent athletic advantage like no other exercise.” – Greg Glassman

Yesterday, after a prolonged break from the gym I jumped back in with several sets of deadlifts. The deadlift is one of the best full-body strength exercises around, but many shy away from it because of worries about injury or maybe the ominous name.  No doubt, using improper form could result in injury, but that’s the case with most exercises so start light and learn good form.

Besides, the benefits of the deadlift far outweigh any real of perceived risks and include better core stability and increased strength of the:

  • back
  • abdomen
  • legs
  • hips
  • arms
  • shoulders

“The Deadlift, among other lifts improved my core strength to such a degree that I could actually take advantage of the skeletal muscle developed by years of less functional strength training.” – Mark Twight

The motion of bending down to pick something up is one of the most common movements we make in our daily lives.  The deadlift not only teaches good posture and form, but increases strength in muscles that would otherwise be more prone to injury.
