Lawrence of Arabia

After becoming convicted and disgusted at how little I know about the methods and theory of waging small, unconventional wars, I have started a little side project – educating myself on counterinsurgency.

The following quote comes from the first book I’m reading on the topic, one that seems to encompass the frustration of a strong, technologically advanced force like the U.S. military finding itself engaged in “the war of the flea” with opponents far less sophisticated, but incredibly effective at waging war. One that avoids our strengths and exploits our weaknesses.

“To make war upon rebellion is messy and slow, like eating soup with a knife” -T.E. Lawrence

More to come on what is shaping out to be an interesting, taxing subject.

“The Sling and the Stone” is another good book on this topic you should check out. They use an excerpt in USAF IDE (Air Command and Staff College). Written by a former Marine O-6.
