First Ever Q&A – Ask Me Anything

Track Select

People say that one of the best parts of blogging is connecting with readers and I completely agree.  The only problem is I haven’t done this as well as I’d like to over the past few months.  Responding to comments is great and I will continue to do so, but it does not completely solve my main issue: I WANT TO KNOW MY READERS!

So, in an effort to do so I am taking the first step by allowing you to ask any questions you would like.  (Hat tip to Cory Huff @ A Good Husband for helping inspire this post) You can ask me about any area of my life such as: life as an Air Force pilot, husband, or father of a baby girl.  Or you could ask me about going to the Air Force Academy, my relationship with God, my favorite books, etc.

You get the idea.  I only ask that you tell me something about yourself at the end.  It doesn’t have to be a detailed biography, something as simple as your age and profession is perfectly acceptable.  So, let the games begin!

Hey Cameron,

How do you juggle being a follower of Christ in the armed services? What are the potential pitfalls and how do you navigate them? How do your fellow servicemen view your faith? Why is Ron Burgundy your biggest hero? :)

I’m interested in some of the same questions Joe has. I don’t know what your thought are on the Iraq war and that’s not what I’m asking, but what are your thought on being part of the military in a time of unjustified war (whether that be in Iraq or not, I’m not trying to argue that point). How would you reconcile being a Christian in the armed forces in a time of unjust war? You asked for it :)

If I wanted to learn how to fly, what would you suggest is the best approach (which airplane to start with, how much time would it take, how expensive do you think it would be)? (I am not based in USA – but its ok if your advice is US specific.)

Whats the best thing you learned as a pilot that you wouldn’t have in the boring 9-5 job?

Something about me: I haven’t worn a watch on my hand since more than 3 years now.

How long do you plan to stay in the AF? Do you plan to fly for a living when through? Is flying for a living fun? Or do you think it eventually become just another day at the office?

You ever fly sailplanes?

Wow. I was going to post almost exactly what Joe and Dustin have posted. I have been recently reading and researching the Scriptures about violence, pacifism, war, and self-defense. (I have my own assumptions and though, but I don’t want to go off of my “gut” without being able to back that up with some Biblical explanation/confirmation.)

But since they asked that question…

My wife is pregnant with our first child, a girl! As the father of a girl what do you feel is most important advice for a father-to-be that is having a girl? (I am not really asking for general fatherhood advise, but specifically being a father to a girl.) Thanks!

Hey Cameron. I know that the Air Force requires you to move around quite a bit, making it difficult to maintain a stable life for you and your family. What have you found to be the best ways to stay connected to old friends and get involved in your new communities? Along those lines, how do you go about finding a new church? [I know I've asked you some of these in person, just thought it might benefit others as well :) ]

The popular image of the military suggests that it’s still a difficult place to be if you’re a woman. Do you concur with this? Would you want your daughter to be in the armed services?

Also, fill in the blank:

My life is __% like the movie Top Gun.

I will ask an easy and shallow question. Whats your favorite TV Series? If you say Prison Break, I will respect you even more.

Hey Cameron, two quick questions:

Why did you start blogging?

What led you to decide on flying as a career?

11 Brett { 08.15.08 at 7:28 am }

When can you retire from the Air Force? When you do, what would you do with your free time?

12 Secret Admirer { 08.15.08 at 9:18 am }

You seem to have a great physique. How do you keep in such great physical shape? And does it have anything to do with your wife’s awesomeness?

13 Sara Martin { 08.17.08 at 12:47 pm }

It seems “Secret Admirer” is on to something. Of course your physique has to do with your wife’s awesomeness. And just wondering how much you miss your friends in Colorado Springs?

What do you think chairs would look like if our legs bent the other way?

Hello Cameron,

ever since I found your blog I’ve read almost everything you blog (except the real estate stuff). I truly enjoy your insight and your sharing it ! Most interseting : how to keep your married life, well, alive.
About me : I am the wife of an Italian AF Colonel, lived in Germany, Italy, the US and back to Germany … and late in my life I have come to appreciate classic “Core Values” although I am a civil engineer myself and was a bit sceptic of “military values” per se. I am German after all with Prussian ancestors.
Well, better late than never …

All the best for you and your family !

p.s.
That is a lovely quick pic of you and your wife. Great smiles :-) )) I hope you 2 were relaxed.

Hi Cameron,

Three questions:

(1) How do you stay organized and focused on achieving your goals in your professional and personal life? How do you personally handle setbacks or ways that you know other people have handled them that you admire?

(2) Any grooming or fashion advice you can give as a man?

(3) How do you handle money issues between you and your wife or friends?

Hi, I am an aspiring pilot am trying to work out wether I should join the Royal Australian Air Force or take part in the Qantas Cadetship (ie; Military or Civilian paths?) What do you recomend, and how would you recomend I make the decision?

Also if I joined up I would look to fly the C-17 or the KC30B, can you tell me more about the lifestyle that comes with these aircraft?

Dear Cameron,
Having received your blog address from your father-in-law I have read quite a lot of your articles. I’m glad to say that our cousin Marlize married a very wise young man! Congratulations with the birth of you and Marlize’s baby girl Malone. We have sent our blessings with your f-i-l at the time of her birth though.
My question to you is quite a simple one: how do you manage to fit all your writing in with your busy schedule? And also: when will you people be visiting us here in South Africa? Good to know that you and Marlize are doing great there in the USA! Regards!
Fred Balt.
